Tel Aviv’s history and attractions

After Jerusalem, Tel Aviv is the second most populous city in Israel, with a population of almost 439,000 people. Situated on the Mediterranean coastline, it’s the financial and technological center of the country. It was founded in 1909 by Jews as a modern housing estate on the outskirts of the ancient port city Jaffa. Eventually, other Jewish suburbs of Jaffa established outside Jaffa’s Old City became part of Tel Aviv, the oldest being Neve Tzedek.
A building in Tel Aviv
Aside from the Bauhaus architecture, there are many things to see and do in the city. The Eretz Israel Museum focuses on the archaeology, folklore, and crafts of Israel, and you can visit an on-site excavation site of 12th century BC ruins. The Jaffa Old City features unique dining and art galleries for those more interested in modern attractions, and Yarkon Park, which is open all year, is home to 6 different gardens, including one of the largest rock gardens in the world.
